From KFOR Spotlight Guest to Photographer: A Full-Circle OKC Moment

There are some opportunities that make you stop for a second and think, wait… how did I get here?

This was definitely one of them.

Back in June, I walked onto the set of KFOR Spotlight as a guest. I’m usually the one safely behind the camera telling everyone else what to do, so being the one sitting in front of the cameras was a little outside my normal comfort zone.

A few months later, I walked back into KFOR except this time, I had my camera in my hand.

I got to photograph the KFOR Spotlight crew, and getting to experience both sides of the show made this one of those really freaking cool full-circle moments in my career as an Oklahoma City brand photographer.

My First Trip to KFOR Spotlight

In June, I was invited onto KFOR Spotlight to talk about my photography, my work with women, and the community I’ve built through The Self Love Club.

My photography business has never really been just about taking pretty pictures. I photograph women through so many different seasons of their lives… motherhood, maternity, family, boudoir, business and sometimes simply because they deserve to have a photo of themselves that they freaking love.

Getting to sit on a local Oklahoma City show and talk about the work I’ve spent years building was a pretty surreal experience. You can see the full interview here!

Then I Got to Go Back With My Camera

Fast forward a few months, and I was invited back to photograph the KFOR Spotlight team.

One of my favorite things about the Spotlight crew is how genuinely joyful they are. You know those people who somehow make you feel like you’ve known them forever, even if you just met?

That’s this crew.

They’re fun, warm, welcoming and full of personality which is exactly what you see when you tune into the show. Getting to photograph them wasn’t about making everyone stand perfectly and smile at the camera. It was about capturing them.

The laughs. The personalities. The energy. The connection between everyone.

Basically all the things I love photographing anyway.

Brand Photography Should Actually Feel Like Your Brand

As an Oklahoma City brand photographer, photographing the KFOR Spotlight crew was such a good example of what I believe brand photography should actually be.

Your photos shouldn’t just prove that you exist.

They should tell me something about you before I ever meet you.

If your business is joyful, your photos should feel joyful. If you’re approachable, I want to see that. If your team spends half the day laughing together, I don’t want to photograph everyone like they’re posing for their seventh-grade yearbook.

Your brand photos should give people a little taste of what it’s actually like to work with you.

That’s what I loved about photographing this crew. KFOR Spotlight is built around people, personality, local stories and connection, and that’s exactly what we wanted their images to feel like.

A Pretty Cool Full-Circle Moment for This Oklahoma City Photographer

There are a lot of little milestones in business that you don’t necessarily think about when you’re first starting.

You just keep showing up, learning, creating and saying yes to opportunities that scare you a little. Then one day you find yourself sitting on the set of a television show talking about the business you built.

A few months later, you’re standing behind the camera photographing the people who interviewed you.

That’s pretty cool.

I’m incredibly grateful to the KFOR Spotlight team for welcoming me both in front of and behind the camera.

And not that I need to mention it, but you should definitely catch KFOR Spotlight weekdays at 11 a.m.
