If you’re nervous about a photoshoot, you are not alone.
In fact, one of the most common things I hear from women before a session is, “I’m excited, but I’m also really nervous.”
No matter the session you are booking, being in front of the camera can feel vulnerable. Most women aren’t worried about the photographer or the session… they are worried about themselves. They wonder if they’ll know how to pose, if they’ll look awkward, if they’ll like how they look in the final images, or if they’ll spend the entire session feeling uncomfortable. Am I right?
The good news is that feeling comfortable in front of the camera isn’t something you’re expected to figure out on your own. Helping women feel confident and supported is one of the most important parts of my job.

Many women believe they are simply bad at photos. They tell me they’re awkward, not photogenic, or uncomfortable in front of the camera.
The truth is that most people don’t spend their days being professionally photographed. Of course it feels unfamiliar. Imagine being asked to stand in front of a camera while someone watches your every move. It’s completely normal to feel uncomfortable at first.
What I’ve found after photographing hundreds of women is that the issue usually isn’t that they are awkward. It’s that they haven’t been given guidance. As a photographer for women, it’s my job to give you guidance. I will direct poses, give you prompts, photograph you from your preferred angle (yes, i ask!) and help you adjust your positioning to help you feel comfortable and confident. Over the years, I just know how to pose all bodies so leave it up to me!
Don’t believe me? Here’s what Becky, a recent client, had to say:
“Going into our maternity photoshoot, I was honestly pretty nervous about a photoshoot because I’m awkward when it comes to taking pictures and usually hate doing photoshoots. I was worried I wouldn’t know what to do or that the photos would feel stiff and uncomfortable especially with someone I’ve never met.
From the moment we arrived, Kalee made the entire experience so much fun. She created such a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere that all of my nerves disappeared. She guided my husband and I through every pose, told us exactly what to do, and made everything feel natural and effortless. We never felt awkward or unsure because she was so encouraging and helpful throughout the session.
If you’re nervous about being in front of a camera like I was, Kalee is the perfect photographer. She made the experience a blast, and we will treasure these photos forever.”

When I say I’ll guide you through your session, I don’t mean I’ll point a camera at you and tell you to smile.
I mean I’ll be paying attention to dozens of little details so you don’t have to.
Some of the things you might hear me say during a session include:
Before we even begin, I’ll ask if you have a preferred side and if there is anything you’d like me to be mindful of during your session. If a quick adjustment would help, such as moving hair, straightening clothing, or adjusting a strap, I’ll always ask permission before touching you.
My goal isn’t to change how you look. It’s to make sure nothing distracts from you.

One of the biggest mistakes photographers make is assuming the experience starts when the camera comes out.
For me, it starts much earlier.
Before your session, you’ll receive a questionnaire that helps me get to know you and your specific needs. This gives me insight into what you’re hoping to capture, any concerns you may have, family dynamics, personality differences, and anything else that will help me create a session tailored to you.
No two clients are exactly alike, and I don’t believe sessions should be treated that way.
The questionnaire allows me to plan intentionally and understand how I can best serve you before we ever meet in person.

Another reason women feel nervous before a photoshoot is because they’re unsure what to expect.
What should they wear?
Should they book hair and makeup?
What time should they schedule their session?
How should they prepare their children?
What happens if their kids don’t cooperate?
These are all valid questions, which is why every client receives a detailed prep guide.
My prep guide walks you through everything you need to know before your session. It includes wardrobe recommendations, hair and makeup tips, timing suggestions, prep advice for kids, and guidance on what to expect during the experience. The more prepared you feel, the more confident you’ll be when session day arrives.

There is a difference between photographing women and specializing in women.
Over the years, I’ve learned that women often carry concerns into a session that have nothing to do with photography and everything to do with how they feel about themselves.
Many women worry about their weight. Others worry about a feature they’ve always been self-conscious about. Some worry they won’t know what to do with their hands. Others are concerned they’ll look stiff, uncomfortable, or awkard.
Because I specialize in photographing women, I understand those concerns.
I know how to guide women in a way that helps them feel comfortable without making them feel overly posed. I understand how body positioning, angles, posture, and movement can completely change how an image feels. Most importantly, I know how to create an experience that allows women to stop focusing on their insecurities and start focusing on the moment.

If you’re nervous about a photoshoot, I want you to know that your feelings are completely normal.
You don’t need modeling experience.
You don’t need to know how to pose.
You don’t need to have everything figured out.
My job is to guide you through the process, prepare you before your session, support you during your session, and create images you’ll love afterward.
From the questionnaire and prep guide to posing guidance and thoughtful direction, every part of my experience is designed to help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.
Because when you feel comfortable, you’re able to focus on what really matters: celebrating this season of life and creating memories you’ll be grateful to have for years to come.
